Bad Sulza

The spa and wine-growing town of Bad Sulza, situated between Weimar, Jena and Naumburg, enjoys a picturesque location on the banks of the river Ilm. With its forested hillsides, delightful river valleys, sun-kissed wine terraces and therapeutic springs, it holds great appeal all year round.

The town has a wide range of leisure activities. Visitors can enjoy a unique mix of nature and culture on a discovery tour along the Saale and Unstrut Wine Route.

It is well worth visiting the spa gardens with a music pavilion (1873, listed), historical inhalatorium (1903), pump room (1910) and salt processing plant.

Here, the 'Louise' salt-evaporation works and the Darnstedt brine drilling towers are particularly striking. A tour of the Salt Works and Local History Museum gives an interesting insight into the history of salt extraction dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

As well as salt extraction, wine-growing plays a prominent role in Bad Sulza and the surrounding area - a tradition that goes back more than 800 years. It is with good reason that this wine-growing region - the most northerly in Europe - is known as the ‘Tuscany of the East' far beyond Thuringia's borders.

The Thuringian Wine Gate leading to the Saale-Unstrut Wine Route is a popular tourist attraction.

Also worth seeing are Goethe's Garden House 2 and the Emsenteich wetlands. The 4km nature trail up to Sonnenburg Castle is ideal for walking enthusiasts.

For a relaxing bathing experience incorporating light and music, head for the Toskana Therme pool complex with its state-of-the-art Liquid Sound technology.
