Bad Berka

Everybody needs some time to relax once in a while; a chance to recuperate, to refresh body and soul and perhaps try out something new. Bad Berka can offer you a wide range of options in this respect. This little town, nestled amongst wooded hills in the romantic Ilm valley, is a mere twelve kilometres from Weimar, a former European Capital of Culture, and 20 kilometres from Erfurt. Home to clinics offering the highest levels of medical expertise, Bad Berka nevertheless retains the feel of a delightful provincial town. The Bad Berka cure and the foundation of the town baths in 1813 both owe much to the great German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who for many years offered help and advice to the townspeople as they developed the spa resort.

But Goethe wasn't alone in appreciating the benefits of this small spa town. Artists and sculptors such as Bartold Asendorpf, Professor Adolf Brütt and Alexander von Szpinger chose to live and work in Bad Berka, whilst doctors flocked to the town to exploit its curative qualities.

Bad Berka's exclusive location and mild climate, together with the healing waters of the Goethe well, have been attracting holidaymakers and visitors looking to boost their health for nearly 200 years. Its acute care and rehabilitation clinics offer patients from all over the world the highest levels of medical care.

Other attractions alongside a wealth of culture and entertainment include the town's spa gardens, modern Kneipp hydrotherapy facilities, VitalParcours fitness trail, bowling alley, outdoor pool, gliding field, caravan parks and sports and recreational areas.

For fantastic views of the surrounding countryside, it's well worth climbing the 143 steps of the 26m-high Paulinenturm, which is perched on top of Adelsberg hill (416m) just outside the town. And to round off a wonderful day, why not take in an exhibition or concert, enjoy the Parkgeflüster son et lumière in the spa gardens (from May to October), or simply have a drink and a chat in one of Bad Berka's cosy taverns?
