Kromsdorf Castle

This picturesque Renaissance castle is a stone's throw from Weimar. The adjacent palace garden was created in 1660 by Johann Theodor Mortaigne and, in terms of its design, is quite unique north of the Alps.

The square garden is surrounded by a wall that contains niches adorned with 62 sandstone busts, made between the 16th and 19th centuries. As well as emperors, kings and princes from the modern era such as Charles V and Louis XIV, they also depict classical figures.

After the palace had been destroyed and plundered by the French in 1806 after the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt, Grand Duke Karl Friedrich of Saxe-Weimar was the first to take charge of the castle around 1830.

His wife, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, spent many happy times here. It is thanks to her dedication that there is a walking trail from Tiefurt House to Kromsdorf Palace.

Today, the palace is owned by the local authority and, with the help and commitment of the supporters' association, has become a popular meeting and cultural centre in the last few years.
