The Caroline tower

The Caroline tower in Kiliansroda, one of the most popular destinations for walks and excursions in the Weimarer Land region, is perched on Kötschberg hill (497m above sea level) approximately 4km north of Blankenhain .

It was built of limestone from the neighbouring village of Mechelroda in 1909 as a memorial to the Grand Duchess Caroline of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

There are 106 steps to climb to reach the top of the 26m high tower, but all the effort is well rewarded with magnificent views - extending as far as 80km on a clear day.

The 4.5km walking trail from Blankenhain market square to the Caroline tower is signposted with yellow and white markings.

There is a natural play area for children to let off steam, sprawling green fields for playing and running around, and plenty of benches and seating to take a rest. A discovery trail around the Caroline tower provides visitors of all ages with information on the history and nature of the surrounding area.
