Tannroda Castle

Stadtansicht Tannroda

Tannroda is situated in the Middle Ilm Valley at the confluence of the Schwarza river and the Ilm, and today belongs to the town of Bad Berka .

Visitors are greeted from afar by landmarks past and present: the well-preserved and now restored castle keep and ruins, the palace and the Church of St. Michael. The tower and ruins are the remains of the old castle buildings, thought to be from the 12th century.

After the castle was destroyed in 1465, the ‘Red Castle' and ‘Blue Castle' were built at the end of the 16th century; of the two, only the ‘Blue Castle' is still in existence. Nowadays, the keep serves as a viewing tower and the galleried building is home to the Thuringian Basket-Makers' Museum established by the Local History Society.
