Laura Cycle Trail |

The 46km Laura cycle trail completes the link between the Ilm Valley Cycle Route near Weimar and the Unstrut Cycle Route near Sömmerda. Tracing the route of Laura, the former narrow-gauge railway, this is a mellow and welcoming swathe of countryside.
Far from mass tourism, all the gems survive, tucked away in this idyllic region: the rural customs, age-old village churches, half-timbered farmsteads, windmills on the edge of town, village greens, ancient linden trees, and woad stones. |

Traditions centred on the potato and Thuringian potato dumplings continue to be celebrated in the area surrounding the Thuringian Dumpling World in Heichelheim . An annual highlight is the Heichelheim Potato festival at the beginning of September.
Other must-sees include the Castle of Teutonic order in Liebstedt , the "tirica" theme park , and Leutenthal's "Mechanika da Vinci" exhibition.
The outdoor pools at Ettersburg and Ottmannshausen are ideal for swimming or simply cooling off. Fishing is allowed with a licence at Heichelheim, Großbrembach and Berlstedt reservoirs. |

The cycle route runs parallel to the railway. RegionalExpress train services offering free bike transport and special bicycle compartments run every hour in both directions.
